Some of these systems can even reproduce the original page's format, including images, columns, and other non-textual components. However, more advanced systems are now widely available that can achieve high levels of accuracy in recognizing most fonts, and can accept a variety of digital image file formats as input. In the past, early versions of OCR required individual training with images of each character and could only recognize one font at a time. OCR is a subject of research in the fields of artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and computer vision. OCR is widely used for data entry and machine processes such as text-to-speech, machine translation, cognitive computing, and text and data mining. It converts images of typed, printed, or handwritten text into machine-encoded text, making it easier to edit, search, store, and display electronically. OCR, or optical character recognition, is a popular technology used for digitizing printed text records, such as invoices, bank statements, passport documents, business cards, and mail. This can be done by scanning a document, taking a photo of it, capturing text from a scene-photo (such as a picture of a sign or billboard), or extracting text from subtitle overlays on images (such as those used in television broadcasts). However, getting good results with these systems may require some expertise and tuning, so if there is no particular need for running the OCR engine offline, online converters are the best way to go.Optical character recognition (OCR) refers to the process of electronically or mechanically converting images of printed, handwritten, or typed text into machine-encoded text. Wait for the converter to finish and Easily Copy The Text. OCR converter will instantly start the scanning process. With OCR, you can convert painted text in images into editable, searchable, indexable, and storable document. Upload your file to our online OCR converter. What is OCR OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition, which is a technology to recognize text in images of scanned documents and photos. After the scanning process is done, you will get your extracted text from your image file. Two examples of open source OCR systems are Tesseract and PaddleOCR. Then the OCR Converter will instantly scan the image file. If you need to run OCR locally on your desktop computer, there are excellent open source OCR systems available on the market. This helps in scanning and converting texts accurately. For example, to know if such a letter is curved or straight. It also detects the distinctive qualities of a certain letter. Here’s how it recognizes and converts your text:įirst, it searches for the fonts of text characters that have been designed into its algorithm. Want to know how OCR works? ![]() I had this vague interest in the built environment at that point, and I had written my senior thesis on the suburbs. She was in the studio all the time, so I ended up spending a lot of time in that space and just got really interested in this work that architects-in-training were doing that seemed so different from the humanities and English. I knew I couldn’t really be an architect-I didn’t have depth perception-but one of my best friends in college was in architecture school. I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland. How did you get interested in skyscrapers? The “Black skyscraper” is a term in the book that really allows me to talk about all these different ways of being and feeling and knowing Blackness that get yoked to the skyscraper. For Black writers the skyscraper is a site for reimagining the city, reimagining democracy, reimagining a public space. Black writers were interested in the skyscraper not just as white space that they were outside of, but as a place Black characters worked or visited, or took in as a tourist. I also write about the way that Black writers were imagining skyscrapers as sites of modernity. They seem to be struggling with the question: What is race going to be in the future if we live in a world where we’re so scaled out that race becomes a category that’s less functional or less useful? That’s one kind of Blackness I explore in the book. They describe a view from the top of the skyscraper in which people look like ants, or dots, or specks, like dark ephemera. These writers imagine skyscrapers, in some instances, turning everyone Black. What “perceptual strains” did skyscrapers put on people? I see these writers asking: How have skyscrapers changed the ways we see race, how we see bodies, how we perceive and make judgments about people in the world given the perceptual strains that the skyscraper puts on people or bodies. In this book, I’m thinking about how writers from 1880 to 1930 tried to make sense of skyscrapers when they were new. ![]() How do you go about and understand your world when the scale of your world is changing, the density of the world is changing, the height at which you see is changing, the height at which you work is changing? As skyscrapers become taller, as they evolve aesthetically and structurally, those questions of what it means to see and how you see change, too. I’m interested in this early moment of the skyscraper when people are learning how to live in dense spaces, how to live and operate on different stories, but more importantly for me, it’s about learning to perceive. The skyscraper is a product of all of these forces and movements, but it’s also contributed to these discourses at the same time. It came of age in the late-nineteenth century with urbanization, mass immigration to the U.S., and industrialization. The skyscraper is really a symptom of an era. For me it’s not only about the invention of a building type, though that’s certainly important, but also the invention of a new language or descriptive language to describe height, density. My project is really around the invention of the skyscraper. Adrienne Brown, Assistant Professor, University of Chicago The early language with which we talked about skyscrapers was childlike, poetic, almost utopian. Originally, the word was hyphenated-“sky-scraper”-to point out the artifice of the term. ![]() Instead, a steel interior holds the weight. We tend to think about the skyscraper now as merely a tall building, but when the word was invented it referred to a building structure that’s not wedded to construction rooted in walls or masonry that holds the weight of the building. But it’s called a skyscraper because it had a steel frame. It wasn’t even the tallest building in Chicago at the time. The Home Insurance Building in Chicago was once considered the “first skyscraper,” but it was only 10 stories tall. ![]() “Skyscraper” is an interesting word because it has really changed a lot. If the medication proves to be ineffective, your veterinarian will prescribe something different. Medications for Nausea In Dogsįor dogs that aren’t generally anxious or that don’t have ear infections or any ear pathologies, you will have to give your pet the medication only before taking a car trip. Since motion sickness is not a typical disease, the veterinarian will prescribe several medications to limit the severity of the clinical signs as much as possible. Big dogs like Great Danes will experience a car ride differently than a smaller dog such as a Dachshund.Īnother tip that we can give you is to use your smartphone to record the way your dog is behaving, especially if someone can help you so that you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. Make note of their behavior and how they respond to the car ride. Since the vet is not going to be able to see your dog ‘in action’ since they’re probably not going to be in the car next to you, you will have to do your best to memorize your dog’s symptoms and then pass that info on to the veterinarian. Puppies can show the same signs as adults, so it doesn’t make any difference. That means that taking the bus or the train to the vet clinic as an alternative might not be a good idea. Unfortunately, most dogs that experience motion sickness of this type are also likely to experience other types. In the beginning, you can help your dog to deal with the issue by avoiding car rides as much as possible. As you probably know by now if you are a responsible pet parent, dogs need to visit the animal hospital at least once a year. If you think that your dog is suffering from car sickness, the best way of going about things would be to first talk to your veterinarian. How to Treat A Dog with Car Sickness Take Your Dog to The Vet Believe it or not, there are dogs out there that are unlucky enough to suffer from both, and they have the hardest time putting up with car rides. ![]() Not all of them have to appear on the same dog, but some can exhibit several.Ĭar motion sickness in dogs shares some of its signs with travel anxiety. If they suffer from car sickness, dogs can show the following clinical signs. But the truth is that the symptoms can vary from one car ride to the next and also depending on a number of factors. If your dog has gotten car sick before, you probably think that you know what to expect. Some dogs love chasing cars, but hate being in them, and probably because of car sickness. If you know that your pup is more likely to experience nausea in the car, it might be a good idea to tell your vet so that they can prescribe the right medication, one that doesn’t cause this side effect. Some types of medication can cause carsickness, too. So that’s why pets with otitis or any ear conditions can be carsick. The inner ear contains a sensory organ that’s connected to the brain, particularly to the vomiting center in it. ![]() For example, dogs that have middle or inner ear infections or those who suffer from vestibular disease are far more likely to experience motion sickness compared to healthy pets. ![]() We’ve already mentioned anxiety and age as two predisposing factors, but dogs can be sick in a variety of situations - from short trips to long car rides, any puppy or adult dog could get sick.Īnother cause of motion sickness in dogs is any condition relating to the inner ear. Senior dogs can be carsick, too, even if they’ve taken more than enough rides in the past and nothing has happened. On top of that, the inner ear of puppies and young dogs hasn’t fully developed, and the inner ear is essential when it comes to keeping a dog’s body well-balanced. Riding in the car can make a dog feel stressed not just because of the motion itself, but also because they might associate the experience with stressful adventures such as going to the animal hospital.Ĭar sickness is far more common in puppies and young dogs, especially since they are not capable of controlling their reactions as well as healthy adult dogs. In case you didn’t know, dog motion sickness is, actually, pretty common and it affects thousands of pets across the world. What Is Dog Motion Sickness/Car Sickness?Ĭar sickness is a type of motion sickness.
